Guidelines Testing Exercise

The Guidelines Testing Workshop is a practical way to validate your design guidelines before finalizing them. This exercise helps identify gaps, ambiguities, and implementation challenges. Here's how to run this workshop effectively:

Purpose:

  • Test the clarity and applicability of draft guidelines

  • Identify gaps, ambiguities, or conflicting guidance

  • Discover edge cases not addressed by current guidelines

  • Gather practical feedback from actual users of the guidelines

  • Validate that guidelines produce the intended design outcomes

Materials Needed:

  • Printed or digital copies of draft guidelines for one area

  • Design challenge briefs (2-3 realistic scenarios)

  • Design tools (paper, digital tools, or both)

  • Documentation template for feedback

  • Timer for time-boxed activities

Process:

01 Preparation (Before the workshop)

  • Select one area of guidelines to test (e.g., forms, navigation, color usage)

  • Create draft guidelines with enough detail to be actionable

  • Develop 2-3 realistic design challenges that would use these guidelines

  • Prepare feedback capture forms

02 Introduction (15 minutes)

  • Explain the purpose of the workshop

  • Review the draft guidelines being tested

  • Clarify that the goal is to find problems with the guidelines, not to produce perfect designs

  • Emphasize that questions and confusion are valuable feedback

03 Guidelines Review (20 minutes)

  • Give participants time to read through the guidelines

  • Ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding

  • Document any immediate points of confusion or questions

04 Design Challenge Application (60-90 minutes)

  • Break participants into small teams (2-3 people)

  • Assign each team one design challenge

  • Ask teams to create design solutions using only the provided guidelines

  • Instruct teams to document:

    • Questions that arose during application

    • Points where guidelines were unclear

    • Situations where guidelines conflicted

    • Aspects of the design not covered by guidelines

05 Solution Presentation (30 minutes)

  • Each team presents their design solution

  • Team explains how they applied the guidelines

  • Team shares challenges they encountered

  • Other participants provide feedback on whether the solution follows guidelines

06 Guided Discussion (30 minutes)

  • Discuss common issues encountered across teams

  • Identify patterns in questions or confusion points

  • Explore edge cases discovered during the exercise

  • Evaluate whether guidelines led to consistent outcomes

  • Gather suggestions for improvements

07 Guidelines Refinement Planning (20 minutes)

  • Prioritize issues to address

  • Brainstorm potential solutions for major gaps

  • Assign responsibility for guidelines revisions

  • Set timeline for next iteration

Benefits:

  • Provides practical validation before wider implementation

  • Identifies issues from the user's perspective (designers who will use the guidelines)

  • Helps create more comprehensive, useful guidelines

  • Builds buy-in through participation

  • Develops shared understanding of how guidelines should be applied

Tips for Effective Testing:

  • Include participants with diverse experience levels

  • Choose realistic challenges that reflect actual work

  • Remind participants to focus on testing the guidelines, not creating perfect designs

  • Encourage honest feedback about limitations and frustrations

  • Document all questions that arise, even if they were eventually resolved

This workshop works best when guidelines have been drafted but not finalized. It provides invaluable feedback that helps refine guidelines to be more practical, comprehensive, and usable in real-world design situations.
